DOLAN SPRINGS, Ariz. — A gun instructor died Monday after being shot by a nine-year-old girl firing an automatic weapon.
Charles Vacca, 39, was wounded about 10 a.m. at an outdoor shooting range in White Hills, Ariz., near the Nevada-Arizona border, WTVR reported.
The instructor was standing near a girl who was handling a 9 mm Uzi-style submachine gun, police said.
Local police said the child fired once on purpose, then lost control of the gun, firing four more rounds. Recoil caused the weapon to accidentally point upwards over the child’s head, allowing a bullet to strike Vacca in the head, police said.
He died later that day at a Las Vegas-area hospital, police said.
The child’s parents were present at the time of the incident, police said.
